Song of Solomon: A Novel

★★★★★

5/5 Stars

My Review –

In Song of Solomon, readers are transported on a transformative odyssey alongside a young black man striving to break free from the cultural shackles that bind him. Our main character, Milkman, is on a journey towards spiritual freedom and self-discovery.

Each turn of the page we are sung to by Morrison’s lyrical weaving of songs and stories of forgotten family histories. Each providing a nugget of clarity towards the making of a new Milkman. In a community where most of the past generations were illiterate, songs tell the story of the past. So as Milkman is forced to ponder his heritage, Morrison is inviting the reader to ponder the intricacies of identity and liberation.

Forever will I be a zealot of Toni Morisson’s work – this novel is nothing short of another example of Morrison’s unparalleled talent as a storyteller and her enduring legacy as one of the most influential voices in American literature.
